Imagine a bunch of wire thermocouples literally placed in parallel. That's just like a sheet of thermocouple. A thermocouple could also be directly built of of metal in the form of sheets.
The first example makes the effect on the output clear. The open-circuit voltage of all those identical thermocouples in parallel is just the same as the voltage of any one of them. The current-delivering ability goes up as the numebr of parallel wire thermocouples, or as the width of the sheets.
