All internal combustion engines generate heat.  If it is not dissipated the the engine will get too hot  and eventually stop working.  Many engines are cooled by circulating water or oil in the engine block.  It is necessary to get rid of this heat so the fluid circulation path is routed through a radiator where cooler air removes some of the heat.
