Volume Change When Salt Dissolves

When ordinary NaCl salt is dissolved in water, the solution has more volume than the water had but less than the combined volumes of the water  and the salt. There are some other salts for which the volume of the solution is even less than that of the water itself. We mention some (e.g MgSO₄) in this old answer:
