Steel Coins in Disguise as Bronze Pence

Q:
I was looking through my bag the other day and some change in it seemed to stick to the linning; on closer inspection, it was actually stuck to the magnet on the clasp. My question is , why did only the 1 and 2 pence pieces [bronze coins] stick when the silver coins [allegedly nickle] did not stick?

A:
Hello Gareth,
I looked at a few web sites and learned that the 1p and 2p coins are made of copper coated steel.  The steel is readily attracted to magnets.  Silver or nickle, as you suggest, are not attracted.

Actually, pure nickel would be, so these must be some sort of alloy. Mike W.
