a circular magnet harvested from a speaker. I am trying to break it into 3 equal segments. how can I do that ? they say saw cut will weaken magnetism.

A:

Good question. Heat and mechanical shocks both weaken permanent magnets. My guess is that the best way to saw this up would be by advancing a high-speed fine diamond wheel very slowly forward while keeping the magnet cool with flowing water. That should minimize heating and mechanical shock. You'll lose magntization right near the cut but maybe not too much elesewhere. If you have a similar little bar magnet you could try it out first on that.
