Magnetism Through Ice

Q:
Great sight... Can a metal object that has been sitting in a pond for a number of years, be found and attach itself to a magnet through 10 inches of ice? And if so, how strong would the magnet hacevto be? Thanks.

A:

That's possible, since ice has almost no effect on magnetic fields. We can't give a specific "strength" for the magnet because it depends on what the object is made of, whether it's possibly floating, what sort of size and shape the magnet has, and so on.
