Magnets With Signatures

May take a couple of times asking in different variations, but I am wondering if there was a way to give a magnet a specific signature so you can �tune� other magnets to only be attracted to it once attuned to its signature?

I guess you could make a magnet with a pattern of a large number of N and S poles on the surface. In fact, magnetic recording disks (hard drives) are something like that. Then a matching reversed pattern would be atracted once it was brought very close. Most other patterns would give very small forces.
