Hello Larry,
The binary system you refer to is over 8000 light years away. If it does go boom the chances of the gamma radiation hitting the solar system are quite small. If it did, the radiation would engulf the complete solar system with equal intensity since the beam spreads out. Its effect on the sun would be minimal, however there could be serious consequences on earth, such as life extinction.
Personally, I'm not going to worry about it. There are other disasters far more probable. You may have seen the article in .
