Bumpy Eggshells

Most recent answer: 02/04/2018

Hi! I have recently done the eggshell experiment on lemon juice. What surprised me most is that after 3 days of immersion, the eggshell was very corrosive, this means, had lots of bumps on it. In fact, it gained weight... It would be very gratifying if you could answer why did the weight increase and why did the eggshell turn corrosive. Thanks!

My guess is that the bumps come from little spots where the shell is protected from the acid by little fragments of protein membrane. I'm suprised that the shell gained weight, since some of it should have dissolved. Maybe there was a little juice still stuck on it, adding to the weight.
