So called anti-matter has been around for a long time. In 1928 the theoretical physicist Paul Dirac postulated that there should be a partner to the electron that would have the same mass but opposite charge. In 1932 Carl Anderson discovered the anti-electron in a cloud chamber photograph. He named it the positron. When a positron meets up with its electron counterpart they self annihilate and give up their rest mass in the form of high energy photons. Anderson received the Nobel Prize for his work.
The anti-proton was first produced at the Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley California in 1955. The physicists Owen Chamberlain and Emilio Segre received the Nobel Prize for their work. You can find out more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimatter
