A:
Yes, if you can afford it- but it won't do what you want it to do. A standard iron rod magnetizes a lot in the field direction and increases the strength of the magnetic field at the ends of the rod. A gold rod very, very slightly magnetizes in the the opposite direction, causing a slightly weaker field at the ends than you would get with no rod.
