Microwaves are used to heat things up. In particular, they’re used to heat things up that have water in them (usually food). That’s because microwaves actually work by heating up water. The microwave machine sends out tiny waves that are also called microwaves (confusing, huh?). These waves hit the water molecules in your food and make them shake around. Since something’s heat is really just how fast its molecules are moving, this makes your food hot.
