It used to be called 'cps', cycles per second. Now it is called Hertz in honor of the German physicist Heinrich Hertz who discovered electromagnetic radiation.
Many units are named for scientists who were involved in research relevant to the unit.
Many come to mind such as the Ampere, named after a French mathematician and physicist, considered the father of electrodynamics, the Volt, named after the Italian physicist who invented the battery, the Farad, the Fermi, the... you get the idea.
