Where are we Headed?

Q:
What exactly are the galaxies speeding of to, what I mean is what is the empty space we are heading into? Did this empty space always exist?

From the point of view of any galaxy, it's not going anywhere at all, and the others are tending to move away. A standard way to describe this is to say that space is expanding. That description works quite well, since it implies that the wavelength of light waves in space would also stretch out regardless of which way they're heading, which is just what's seen. So the space we're all in is growing.
