Why does our universe have more baryons than mesons?

The only stable elementary particles are protons, electrons, neutrinos and photons.   All other baryons and mesons will eventually decay into a combination of these three.   For example a neutron will decay into a proton, electron, and neutrino.  A pi-meson will decay into a muon or electron plus the appropriate neutrino.
