Can Other Branes Cause the Cosmological Constant?

Q:
Lately I've read and heard a lot about the possible existence of multiple neighboring universes, dark matter and dark energy and this made me wonder. Is there a possibility that dark energy, that apparently contributes to the rapid expansion of the universe, is in fact causes by neighboring universes having some sort of effect on ours? For example: gravity from neighboring (perhaps bigger, with more mass) universes that sort of "pull" on the edges of our universe? Would love to know to what extend such ideas have been explored!

This one is over my head, but in general yes, there's a possibility that inter-brane interactions affect the cosmological expansion. Here's some references to get you started.
