What happens when a laser passes through a prism?

I assume here you mean the light from the laser passes through the prism. For many common lasers there's only a very narrow frequency of light output. It all is bent almost exactly the same amount by the prism, so it stays as a narrow beam. Some lasers (e.g. an argon ion laser) can put out several lines at different frequencies. These are then split into separate beams by the prism.
