Sand and Water

Q:
When you mix 50ml of dry sand and 50ml of water, you don’t get 100ml?

A:
Right- the sand has a lot of open space filled with air. Water goes into those spaces, so the first batch of water you add hardly changes the sand volume. Once those spaces are filled, more water will increase the volume.
