Perhaps the most basic idea we've tried to get across is that lots of questions, including the sort that sometimes get asked in school, don't really mean anything. What would be different about the world if we said that light was or wasn't a 'property of matter'? As Galileo would say, it wouldn't make any difference if we called it 'polenta'. It is what it is.
