What a great question! I happen to be working with a group that uses scanning tunneling microscopes, STMs, this summer. Their website is: They have a couple of picutres but it may not be exactly what you’re looking for.

Probably the best site for pictures that I’ve found is on IBM’s site, the company that built the first scanning tunneling microscope. Here’s the link:

As for the Kinetic Theory, we’re guessing you mean the classical kinetic theory of gases. Why don’t you try: . Or maybe . (But beware the formula on the second site about the probabilities of each particle having different energies. It’s misleading at best. Let that be a reminder of how much to trust even good web sites!)
