I’m assuming that you’re talking about search engines on the Internet. Search Engines keep a huge list of all the pages that they know about. When you type in what you are looking for, the search engine will look throught its list and tell you what might work.

There are 2 basic types of search engines. Some engines ask people to tell them about their web pages. Once the web page has been added to the list, it can appear when someone searches for it. The other type of search engine will automatically search the Internet by itself and write down things about the pages it finds. These are called Meta-Search Engines.

For a great search engine, use Google.
