There is a good page that explains how to make a magnetic compass: https://www.energizer.com/science-center/how-to-make-a-magnetic-compass. This isn't a magnetic compass - it's a way to figure out the directions using the sun! (Of course, this doesn't work so well on a cloudy day.)

Finally, to find out more about how compasses work, check out this answer: https://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=1327&t=compasses.
