Ice Uses

Can sugar be separated from water by freezing in the same manner as salt? Could Maple sap be condensed in this way? Could ice be used as a semipermeable membrane?

Q Could ice be used as a semipermeable membrane?

A. That sounds pretty impractical since ice is fragile, but there must be some instance where it would work. I believe protons travel much more easily through ice than do other ions.
