Q:
What will happen in 2012? Will the world really end? Are the Earth"s magnetic poles going to be inverted? Will that cause a massive life species extinction? I read that the Mayan calendar is very precise regarding cosmological events and it predicts a period of great changements in 2012! Please tell me!

A:
We have no reason to think the world will end in 2012. Although the Mayans could predict eclipses, which occur in regular patterns, I have no idea why anyone thinks they could predict unque events. I also don't know anything about what sorts of predictions they actually made for these days.

The Earth's magnetic field does seem to be heading for a reversal in the next few thousand years (not in 2012). During the reversal the Earth's magnetic fields will be less effective than usual in shielding the Earth from radiation, so that could make some problems. The field has reversed many times in the past, however, without causing massive exptinctions.
