There are far better people out there than me to answer this question, so why don’t you take a look at these pages... For a good description of how rings of air are formed, check out . And for the most complete website on vortex generators (or ’air cannons’) that I’ve ever seen, look . This site includes as much information as is out there, up to and including how to use a computer to drive the vortex formations.

The mathematical equations governing this sort of phenomenon are much more complex, though. In order to study them, you will first need to spend some time studying the fluid mechanics. I would suggest that you try getting ahold of a good textbook, such as by Frank White.
