At what speed does the effect of gravity travel. If it is instantaneous (effects are immediate at all distances), how is that possible?

A:
You're right that instant gravity would be a problem. It would allow signals to travel faster than light, which creates big paradoxes for relativity.
As we've discussed before, gravitational changes travel at the speed of light.
