As I understand it (and I'm no expert) current versions of string theory are entirely in the quantum mechanical framework. They differ not from QM but from our other big framework, General Relativity. They start off with a high-dimensional space, which then curls up in most of its dimensions, leaving a few extended dimensions which behave like our General Relativistic spacetime on large enough scales.
