Q:
Will preface this with a thank you in advance for your time on my question.Roads here are getting brine pretreatments for the arrival of a large storm system. My question is: How does this help? Is it related to the calories required to freeze?Your friend, Steve Land8066791487

A:
The salt in brine lowers the freezing point of water. So if the storm is expected to get below 0°C, the brine will help keep ice from forming. We discuss the reasons here: http://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=31313.
