Thermodynamics Foils a Great Idea for Alcohol Ice

Q:
I am wanting to make a punch and freeze wine as ice cubes - this way the punch is good for everyone - non alcoholic no cube - alcoholic just put in the cubes? Will this work - freezing the wine into balls?

A:
Alas, the freezing point of ethanol is much lower than the freezing point of water. If you try freezing an ethanol-water solution (e.g. wine) the ice will start to freeze (but only well below 0°C) leaving the ethanol in the liquid.

Nature is not always kind to great ideas.
