K-12 Science 2 Schools Traveling Science Programs: SCIPP Tesla Coil Outreach Program

Program Title:
SCIPP Tesla Coil Outreach Program
Santa Cruz Institute for Particle Physics, UC Santa Cruz Santa Cruz, CA, United States
Geographical Area:
Bay Area, Santa Cruz, Monterey. Almost anywhere within two hours of Santa Cruz.
General Description:
We travel to elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools to give the students a dazzling electrical disply to get them interested in science. The main focus of the demonstration is the tesla coil, which creates bolts of lightning up to about 1.5 meters in length. Our presentation also includes an individual dressing up in a metal suit and getting zapped with our million-volt tesla coil! There's a powerpoint presentation to explain the physics behind how the tesla coil works and how the person in the suit doesn't get electricuted. We also have a person "fight" the lightning with a sword and use a Faraday Cage to demonstrate further the principles behind conductivity and electrical currents. Since we've started this program over 7000 students have seen our demonstration.
Area of Science:
