K-12 Science 2 Schools Traveling Science Programs: The Science House - Chemistry on the Road

Program Title:
The Science House - Chemistry on the Road
North Carolina State University Raleigh, NC, United States
Geographical Area:
Whole state [of North Carolina] - separate programs for the eastern and western parts of the state.
General Description:
Eastern North Carolina:

There are two presentation themes that I do regularly.

States of matter. Demonstrations with liquid nitrogen and dry ice. I condense air, fractionally distill air to separate into nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. I show dry ice subliming and do a lot with density of solids, liquids and gasses. The exact presentation depends on the age of the audience.

Chemical energy transformations. I look at chemical energy converted to light, mechanical, electrical and heat and vice versa. I also discuss the role that chemical play in energy conversion even if there is not net chemical reaction.

Western North Carolina:

I offer two chemistry interactive demonstration shows to middle and high school science classes in the west:

"Material Matters" - This "materialistic" demonstration show explores the states of matter and exemplifies some fascinating physical and chemical properties. Dry ice and liquid nitrogen demos are used to show phase changes. Student volunteers assist in some of the demos and contests.

"Polymer Productions" - A prolific profusion of polymers are presented in this interactive demonstration show! Both natural and synthetic polymers are investigated as nylon, polyurethane, and slime are produced. Students have a baggie of polymer samples that they explore as we discuss polymer types, polymer properties, and polymer processing. If time permits, they also make a small sample of the glue-based "putty" to keep.
Area of Science:
chemistry, physical science
Target Grade Levels:
Eastern North Carolina: K-12, but not all at once.
Western North Carolina: Middle and High School
Target Group Size:
Eastern North Carolina: 2 combined classes, but I try to meet the needs of the host.
Western North Carolina: shows are limited to 30 students.
Eastern North Carolina: Donations appreciated, but not required.
Western North Carolina: My Chemistry on the Road shows are $75 per show to cover the cost of the consumables.
