Do E-meters Work?

Q:
Can human resistance be used to measure brain activity like the scientologists claim their e-meter does?

A:

Any attempt to describe brain activity with a single scalar parameter, particularly one with such a weak relation to thoughts, is clearly bogus. Still, there are some obvious crude connections. If you get nervous, you might start sweating, reducing contact resistance at the skin. Any emotional reaction that causes your capillaries to relax should increase conductivity.
