Can you Connect a dc Motor to the ac Line?

Q:
I have a DC variable drive motor on my treadmill. It was not working. So I wired it directly to the incoming power (120v) by passing the control cards to see if the motor was working. Did I burn up the DC motor by hooking it up directly to the AC current?

A:
You very probably did burn out the motor, since your dc motor is probably designed for much lower voltage than 120V. As a test, it couldn't have worked anyway since there's no way a dc motor will work on ac power.
