Nonsense! you say. They're not the same thing. Well, neither are Watts and Volts.
The Watt is a unit of power whereas the Volt is a unit of potential. In a simple circuit of a battery with voltage V and a resistor of Ω Ohms there will be a current of I = V/Ω Amperes.
The number of Watts is W = V I. To get the total energy consumed you have to multiply the power times the amount of time the circuit is closed. The unit of energy is the Joule and is equal to 1 Watt-second.
