Well, they really don't look black.   In our own Milky Way galaxy there is a monster black hole in the constellation Sagittarius. It it quite visible due to the fact that there is a lot of activity going on.   The black hole sucks up nearby gas, and eats up any stray objects for breakfast.
The process generates all sorts of radiation that we can see with our telescopes.
