Salt to Salt

It sounds like the white compound is what's left when things dried. Since you started out with salt and water, and only the water evaporated, that white compound is still plain old salt.

It probably looks a bit different than the salt you started with. That's because the appearance depends on whether there are big or little crystals. Think of the difference in appearance between granulated and powdered sugar. They're the same compound, but one is in smaller crystals.
