WHY IS IT THAT THE BOAT FLOAT?

Do an experiment.  Take an empty glass and put it base down into a basin of water.  Now try to push it down.  You will feel a force resisting you.   That is the principle of floating boats.  When the counter acting force is the greater than the weight of the boat, the boat will float.  Otherwise it will sink.  Archimedes discovered this principle a long time ago.  The force pushing up is equal to the weight of the displaced water: the volume of the water displaced times the density of water times the acceleration of gravity.  See for a more detailed explanation.
