Wikipedia can be a useful place to to start an inquiry.  But your Mom is right, you shouldn't trust it til you have done more research or thought about the answers you find there.  It is not an authority.   Someone with baloney to sell could write something that isn't true.   This is especially the case for subjects with political implications.   Wikipedia tries to police the entries, but can't keep up perfectly.
