Universe Tearing Things Apart?

Q:
I've heard over and over that the universe is expanding and I have no doubt of that fact. I asked a friend (a physics professor) if the the galaxy's are flying away from each other does that mean that the sun and our planets in our solar system are also flying away from each other and he said no. When I asked why not he said he couldn't explain it because I didn't understand the math. I do agree that I'm poor at advanced math but it seems to me that if the galaxy's fly away from each other so should all the other objects in space including micro and macro size objects. Thanks
