Does ice Form Underwater?

Q:
I understand how ice forms on the surface of a lake. Can you explain how it forms under the water — as in the case of Lake Sassolo in Switzerland? (I'm writing a magazine article for second graders and am having trouble finding a good explanation!) Many thanks!

A:

We don't know much about this but from the little bits of description I can find, it sounds as if the ice doesn't actually form underwater. In the winter, much of the lake fills with solid ice. Then in the summer it melts in irregular patterns, leaving strange underwater structures. At least one of the beautiful online pictures shows an iceberg that does extend to the surface. In the other pictures, it's hard to tell if the ice extends to the surface.
