A:
Gas is one of the 3 most common states of matter. What makes gas stand
out from the other states of matter is the interaction between it's
molecules.
Individual gas molecules spend most of their time alone. In other
words, as they zip around they spend very little time bumping into
other gas molecules. Solids and liquids are different because the
molecules are more stuck together, which is why a given number of
molecules in a solid or a liquid take up less room than the same number
of gas molecules.
There are lots of different types of gases. The air we breath has
about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases. Another gas you
might know about is helium. When you see a balloon that raises up, it
is full of helium. The reason it raises up is that helium is lighter
than air.
