if i were to stick a metal chain through a bunch of wire coils and attach a motor to the chain and attach all the coils to the motors could i make perpetual motion? I doubt it

I agree with you, I doubt it.   Perpetual motion machines have been invented and shown not to work for centuries, starting in the 8th. Hundreds have been contrived.  Even Leonardo da Vinci had a go at it.  The possibility has been disproved both by experimental testing and by theoretical analysis.   The main bugaboo is the second law of thermodynamics.  See the nice articlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_perpetual_motion_machines  for some amusing attempts.
