A:
R. J. Van de Graaff invented the high voltage generator while at Princeton University in 1929.  He later moved to MIT and continued his work there.  The reason behind the invention was to make high energy protons in order to study nuclear reactions.   These devices still have uses in modern accelerators.  For example the pre-accelerator at the Fermi National Laboratory uses one to get the protons up and running before they are injected into the larger complex of stepped energy accelerators.    See the article at for more details.
