Reversing the Splitting of Atoms?

Since there is great amount of energy released from splitting an atom; inversely could you apply that energy back into the proton(s) and neutron(s) and create an element?

Since we all believe in the conservation of energy, as well as the time reversibility of nuclear reactions, in principle the reaction you suggest could take place.  However, the necessary detailed initial conditions would be hard to set up and make it very difficult to actually observe such a reaction.
