K-12 Science 2 Schools Traveling Science Programs: ScOPE
(Science Outreach Program for Education)
Northwestern University Evanston, IL, United States
Our SCOPE program is designed to give younger children some fun exposure to basic chemistry. We generally give presentations in the Chicago area, with some of our previous visits including the Children's Museum at Navy Pier. Our demonstrations usually depend on the general age of the children and the size of the group. They involve a series of safe, hands-on experiments (using common household items) in which the kids are encouraged to participate. Examples of past experiments include those involving the formation of polymers, differences between acids and bases, the properties of matter, and density. Since the presenters are all volunteering Northwestern students, notice of interest at least two weeks in advance is highly appreciated. Also, while we try to accomodate all requests, transportation for us is usually limited to the el, which makes it difficult for us to get to some of the schools that are far from Evanston or Chicago (this is something we're working on).
