SSCI is a two part program that trains high school students to present chemistry demonstrations for elementary schools students under the supervision of high school teachers. Training takes place at Midwestern State University and each school is provided a demonstration kit with most of the materials necessary to complete programs at elementary schools. Depending on school size, high school students have presented the programs to anywhere from single classes to entire schools. The programs have been presented to more than 4000 elementary school students and 300 high school students in its first three years. In addition Dr. Voegel presents demonstration programs regularly at elementary schools primarily to 4-6 grade audiences. Some of the demonstration experiments provide hands-on opportunities for volunteer students.
